Background

Saxemara Artist Studios är startat av mig, John Dunsö. Jag är uppväxt i Saxemara men har bott den största delen av mitt yrkesverksamma liv i Malmö. Jag jobbar som låtskrivare, artistSaxemara Artist Studios was founded by me, John Dunsö. I grew up in Saxemara but have spent most of my professional life in Malmö. I work as a songwriter, musician, carpenter, producer, and project manager within the cultural sector. Before that, I spent many years as a guitarist in the pop band Billie the Vision and the Dancers.

Between 2012 and 2014, I travelled across North and South America with my guitar and recording equipment. I spent much of that time volunteering on various wwoofing-farms, volunteer working outdoors during the days and writing music in the evenings. During this period, I also discovered artist residencies and visited several for the first time. These combined experiences gave me the idea to one day create a place of my own that brings together creative work with nature and wellbeing.

Saxemara has always been an important place to me. Even though I haven’t lived here permanently since childhood, I have always returned. The forest, the sea, and the quiet have made it an ideal creative environment, and it is here that I have written and recorded most of my music.

In early 2024, I gave up my apartment in Malmö, bought an undeveloped plot of land in Saxemara, and began building Saxemara Artist Studios. By the summer of 2024, the main building was completed, which I also live in during periods outside of the residency.

At the end of 2024, I was awarded a development grant from SydostLeader which made it possible to continue the process. By the summer of 2025, the site was fully built, and in September that same year I hosted my first residency participants.

Welcome!

Vision

Saxemara Artist Studios focuses on sustainable creation, meaning that the balance between the creative practice and rest of life, is more important than the outcome of one’s work. Here, those who wish can take part in shared conversations and meals, as well as training and excursions into the nearby nature.

The goal is to create an unpretentious and warm environment together, where creativity is not forced, but emerges naturally from feeling inspired and balanced, both mentally and physically.
